that people want to know All right, well, obviously you can tell by my hat. I got some new Ranger swag. I was in New York. You're right. I was in New York. As we discussed last time. Hopefully you guys listen to the last podcast. I'm going to ask Zach to help a little bit on this one. Okay, really hard to explain New York. Like it's just a like, I don't know. It's just like, it's a we it's like, it's like when you're there you get some sort of I don't know if it's the commercialism behind it, or if it's just the history or what it is, but it's just a different culture. And it's weird to think you're still in America because it's like, it's fast, but it's wrong. Exactly. No, you're not wrong there. But like Yeah, it's like fast and there's there's like weirdos but you kind of ignore them and then there's all this cool stuff you're seeing like, like you can kind of get lost in the city. Next thing you know, you're like we're in Times Square. And then you're like there's the Empire State Building, which accidentally called the Eiffel Tower. When I saw it But that was my second time seeing it the first time I properly identified it the second time accidentally called it the Eiffel Tower. My brother's girlfriend had to correct me. That was a low point of my trip. I was not drunk either. But yeah, but no, it's just little Trade

No, but I saw that last time I was in New York. And I definitely think when you're in New York, that's like a must to go see that well, after everything that happened. Conspiracy Theory and all but whatever. But yeah, like, it was just, it's really cool. It's just, it's amazing. And you do kind of see the history of like, it was a big city like it's, it's obviously why there's like an International Airport, all the different cultures. Like, it's, it's really, really cool. It's, it's a great thing to experience. I personally wouldn't live there. But respect to everyone that does. I'm unfortunately slower and lazier that I don't. I walk fast, but I don't like all that speed that they had. And it just baffled me how that's just like, I don't want to say it's the worst of humanity, because they're actually really a lot of nice people. But some of the things you do they do. It's like, it's definitely different Midwest where me and Zach have spent a lot of our formative years of growing up and all that stuff. So like, I don't know, like the one thing that baffled me is like, they do what we call here. I don't know if they call it everywhere in the world, at least here in the US they do like college crossing, which jaywalking pretty much is what it's called. And so like, the sign will legitimately be like, you'll go live yet don't cross and it'll be like a green light and people are just going and it's just like, the weirdest thing to me. So like, driving in New York sucks already, but then people on the street, like, just don't help it. And so it's just, it's crazy. And then like, everyone doesn't look very happy because they're they're running places and they got things to go do. It's it's really different from the way I'm doing an awful job making sound like it's like a hellhole. It's not it's actually really cool. Like it's so Murph had fun. No, no, no, I, I love seeing but I guess on the brighter side, like, it's, it's weird, but like when you see the buildings, you can almost tell the history behind them. Like they do a great job of like, they'll renovate they look newer and cleaner, but like they stick to the the facades and the building of like, what you'd see in like the the 20s and the 30s, and things like that in some buildings, they do a good job renovating them and keeping them a little bit historically, like what would have been like a little bit, obviously, they've built up now. But we went to like Soho, which is huge for shopping and all that obviously with my mom, my sister, so we had to go shopping. But there was really cool seeing like the cobblestone streets and like the artists brick, I don't think it's cobblestones brick, like the brick streets, the old buildings that you could see that were probably built in the 20s, the 30s and the 40s that like they just renovated and put in like, you know, put in clothing stores and stuff like that. Obviously, this is probably a hot thing to talk about. But you kind of see how COVID spreads in New York because people are just all like people either you were shoulder shoulder at all times, like true, especially because there's a lot of people there for the holidays. And like the holidays there are crazy like, it was it we saw Rockefeller, which was obviously if you guys have seen it on TV, the beautiful Christmas tree lit up. He had the skating rink underneath or tried to play hockey on it got kicked out. That didn't happen. But yeah, Baloo, there's so many people there taking pictures, like it was crazy. You can even rent like tables and tents to like, sit there and enjoy it. And also then go skating, which I imagine was a lot of money. I didn't do it. But you know, that kind of stuff. You know, and then like just it was just downtown was amazing. But I'm looking forward to more trips there because I just wanted to experience it and get used to it. And then of course we will. Next time I go there, I'm going to probably get a little more like fully into it of like doing things and experiencing things. Obviously I want to do like Ellis Island, because that's such a huge part of the American story where people immigrated into. So I'm excited to do all that stuff. But for now, it was just kind of getting used to it seeing what it was like for people that don't know New York, my parents actually live in White Plains, which, yeah, is like an hour outside of the city with traffic. So what's cool though, is they have so most places I think you will agree that most places like they don't have trains like train. The train system isn't really big here in the US except for like agriculture and like out there. Yeah. But in New York, it's like yeah, they got they got New York in Chicago, they have subway trains for everything. So yeah, what's great about what

it's like the only way they can like get into the city. So this is actually one it's funny brought that up, because so my dad's actually from Connecticut, and that's actually people who have money, who don't want to be in the city, which is I understand. So they either go outside like towards Hudson Valley. We're kind of all planes is Yeah. And then you got people who are going out to like Connecticut and other other little states are like, really close proximity. But yeah, they basically take these trains all the way in the city. it's cool. Yeah, that's cool. I mean, it's an hour train ride, but it goes by pretty quick, especially now with cell phones like, Oh, sure. It's all that stuff. And like Zach said, like, a lot of people can't handle the excuse me. I can't handle the city. Yeah, so they go outside of it. So the traffic's Yeah, so white plains is like one of those where a lot of them are former New Yorkers that have just kind of gone away from it. US I feel like it's a lot like that, where it's like, when you're young, you live in the city. It's kind of urban. And then you want to get out of it when you start having kids and stuff like that. But even though there's kind of an influx now people living in the city again. But yeah, it's it was crazy. And so they live in White Plains. I think one of the best things I would recommend when you go to any place that I actually loved was I actually needed a haircut when I was there. So I went to like this. And it was rated pretty high on Google. I went to this like small, I think it was like a boutique beauty salon mostly as a beauty salon. Beauty Salon. was a whole different that's a whole different experience. But the store in New York has everything. No. So I can

And it was like old school what you've seen in movies, like someone's sitting in the chair next to him that wasn't getting a haircut just chatting with them all day. And he just chatted me up explained to me, you know about like, when you ask for haircuts, what they actually mean? Like you could tell he was a true old school Barber, like how it was meant to be back in the day, unlike today, where it's become so commercialized a little bit that you walk in and be like, you know, I want a three cut on the side. And he'd be like, no, no, no, no, he's like, you don't say that? Because everyone sharps there. There's there's buzzing tools are shares, I think differently. And I'm like, not Ohio. We just got over say one thing, and it kind of makes sense. But yeah, he was like, he was like a he was a professional at his craft. You could tell when I felt bad that it was so cheap. And he was in such a. But that's the other thing that's really cool about New York that you probably agree with is like, you find the weirdest things in the weirdest areas. And you would look and be like, how does this place pass pass a health code inspection. But you walk in, it's got like the best food or the best, whatever that is. Yeah. And the final thing, I guess, well, then I'll let Zac ask more questions. But the other thing I couldn't get over was the bakeries. Like they had some amazing bakeries that like, I don't know how to describe it. Like it's kind of like you're up here in the Midwest. We are fat as hell like it's true. We are we are like, you go to like a Panera or something that's like a chain and you get a bagel. And it's like half sugar, half bread. So you go in New York some of these places, and it's like, it's bready. And you're like, Yeah, you're like you. Yeah, and you're like, I don't feel like I'm tasting a lot of this. And then you get like, second bite. And you're like, holy crap. Like, you know, like here you get a seven raisin bagel. You taste the cinnamon you taste the raisin there. You get it. It's like a little bit of cinnamon and then the bagel and the things stick

So and I got the I got the stereotypical things when you're in New York at least I thought it was stereotypical where I was like, I got the what's the Gallop and something cream cheese. What does that again the scallop. No, you don't talk about like capers cape on it. Yeah. So I got one of those. You my bottle opener. Oh, that was crafty. There you go. Nice. So I got like that on like a plain bagel actually tasted pretty good. Even though I was working. There you go. I was nervous about having like seafood and cream cheese on a bagel. But it was really good. Like it's I got it like a pumpernickel bagel which I never eat pumpernickel and it was solid. It was just was and they got they had a they had a walnut and raisin one cream cheese spread, which was amazing. Like, just, it's imagined in Europe. It's completely like it's really good too. But in the US, obviously we have lots of everything. Sure. But they had like 20 different type of cream cheeses. I must have tried at least five of them. And they were all really good. Or no, no, we didn't pickles in Nereus because it was like I didn't really notice them as much. There's a place not to it's yeah, there's a place not too far from my parents that we got it. So like, other day we went there.

But you try not to look to Fanny because like, obviously they want to know members of the family are fans of the team. But it almost also looks bad if you come in they're wearing like a jersey and a hat and all this stuff. Like you look like one of the people in the stands. And it sounds weird, but like, especially with wives and girlfriends like stuff chatting happens so like it either has to be a stylish fan like you know what I mean? Like true, you know, they're wearing leather jackets and they've got a Rangers logo on the back or like stuff like that. Yeah, it's like you have to be very careful about it. Obviously the players don't mind like I once joke my brother like I'm gonna wear your jersey to a game he's like I love that. But like it almost looks weird because then the people that aren't involved in the game look at you kind of funny. Like yeah, they they want you to be fans like I'll make wear the hat but then everything else would be very bland. I might wear blue just to show like as regular load main logo.

Like, you know, so when I was a little kid and I'd sounds like something, I should talk to a therapist about it as a little kid. Like you have to be careful. You always have to mind your P's and Q's. So like even as Canadian, right Q's? Sure. Even as, even as people that like, you know, you support like even as support cast for those that are playing in the game family and all that like, as the thing I think people never realize is like, we have to be careful because of the fancies. What a good like, one of the stories I'll always remember was my dad, unfortunately, because he coaches can't go to so what's really cool is these programs just like companies want to build family culture. Yeah, so the Blackhawks do a father's trip and a mother's trip, but it's every other year. So one year they do mother's and one year they do father's so right go father's go Potter's. But so it lets it lets the pm Ranger do the same thing I believe. And it lets the the parents experience kind of life on the road and with their kids, so you get to travel to one game with them. So my dad unfortunately can't make the rain. The Blackhawks one? Because he's coaching. Yeah, so my brother has always been great and invited me to go. So I've always been like, yeah, of course, I'm gonna go. So I got to experience it. But it's kind of like the as cool as it is. It's also kind of the hard part is that you have to be careful because you're all over social media. And so one time the the coyotes did in Arizona, where my brother was drafted. Yeah, and a friend of mine sent me a message board of coyotes fans, because they posted a picture of all the dads, and they all spotted me out. And they're like, how young is this fucking guy? Like, our team is so fucking Young. This is how young the dads are. And then this is what this is the crazy part. Someone was like, oh, no, no, no, that's his older brother. Like someone was able to find that. And so like, that's why like, I have to be careful on social media. I have to be careful on like, I don't even know I'm on this podcast, swearing like a sailor. But I have to be careful and all that stuff. Because people will look out to basically bash anybody for anything. And I mean, we're not as bad as like football. We're not as bad as basketball, but like, it just, it seems like anytime anyone's in the limelight, you'll have those fans that are looking to shit on them anytime they can. But what was really cool about Madison Square Garden, and the practice facility was just because the Rangers are an original six team. And I'll explain that in a second. They have such a storied history. So they did such a great job, even the practice facility, I can't even I don't know how to explain it where they like, paid homage to all the great Rangers that have played and you know, pictures, stats, things like that. And then you know, so, you know, got to experience that. They share the facility with the Knicks. But it's a weird thing where they divide this big building in half and it's gated and everything. So like the Knicks state of one side, the Ranger state or another, but just some of the stuff we saw was amazing. And so I guess for all you not all you hopefully could be coming hockey fans. Original six was when the NHL was originally started, there was only six teams, which I've been very lucky as a history person to be associated with family that plays for two of them. So the Blackhawks the Rangers are two of the six, the Toronto Maple Leafs in Canada, the Montreal Canadiens and Canada, Boston Bruins and the Detroit Red Wings. I think that's six right there, right? Wayne Gretzky, who has his number has been retired by every single team, the NHL teams that he's even played for. He ended his career in New York. Like he's considered one of the best in hockey. And it's one thing I've talked to a lot of people Wow, it's like when you coach here, whether it's high school or college, it's a very much the high school level is very, very priced. High school is very much like, well, this guy's resume is very strong. Why would I want to work with that kind of guy? That's kind of the mindset because there, everyone's so focused on where am I going to be in three, four years time, I don't want this guy to take over for me. And that's usually between guys are like between 20 and 40. By 40 years old. Like That sounds about right. So guys, between like 47 and 60, they're like, oh, I want young coaches and try to build this thing up properly.

So I just say basically, it's like business you want. They want they want young guys that will work a lot but not beat you threatening. And then when someone has actually it's it's weird, hockey's completely different cuz when I coach high school hockey, it's like you just cycle through coaches, like, it's like, you're bringing someone new, have the kids excited. And then the new generation comes in, they're like, I don't want this coach anymore. They get rid of them. So it's like, Yeah, it's funny how football is completely different that they want a coach for like decades and you're like, wait, what? Like, yeah,

well College, like they'll, they'll take anybody with experience, but they've, they're so strict on certain qualifications they gotta have so then they're like, that's kind of where they stay. So this has been the issue with, I guess, football and hockey kind of meet where they're like, well, you're getting guys who necessarily are not very experienced people. Yeah. Who kind of walk into these spaces. And they're like, well, well, here we are. This is what we're gonna do now. Yeah, like, sucks, right sucks. But yeah, but yeah, I mean, the last couple of weeks I've been doing that. I've, I've talked to a lot of teams, I try to tell teams like, I don't want to be. I don't know, I'm not really, I'm at that point in my life. I was talking over with one guy who's trying to recruit me a couple of weeks ago. He's a quarterback he just signed with the team overseas and and in Eastern Europe, and Central, Central Eastern Europe, somewhere like that. What's possible, whatever. And, like, no offense, like, I have to be at a certain level now. Because I've every team I've been with, I've turned around, and I've done well, but it's like, why am I gonna go to another? You know, kind of like a, you know, above average good team, with no problem. I can coach them in a good team. And then you're like, well, let's, what do I do from there? Yeah, it's, it's like you get to a certain level,

I'm like, That's weird, but okay. I just put out videos, whatever. But But no, it's like, there's only really a couple teams like, oh, we think what you're doing is great. We want to help you out we want you to put not only focus on DC, but also, you know, work together with our marketing department, we can kind of expand our reach and I was like, Oh, sweet. Because everything's been tested or tried through just getting the right talent at the right time and hitting it this and that's why I wrote about a lot of great coaches is they recognized when they were prime, and when they had the team that was going to set their name, and they pushed them. And that's like, because like, I think you're kind of the same, like, we've coached on teams where we just haven't been in that time where it's like, this, is it like this is not going to get much better than this. Like, everything's lined up. Like you had to like work through it. Like we've had to work through the ruts. But so it's like, yes, it's

it's interesting, because now, I've seen a complete shift with at least my squasher, about hockey, but it's very much where you have coaches who come into responsibility who are basically sitting there talking about, well, how run this, I want to run that this is work for us at the team I was with, and you're like, these are very complicated schemes. It's like one of those things where it's like, I respect now that all these coaches realize that they do a good job of understanding like you were very good at with football manager, and I'm a little bit good app, I'm trying to get better at where it's like, yeah, they develop the youth, you have to develop the culture, and understand that it's really just about striking it lucky of kinda like when you watch the Olympics, like some years, some countries are way better than others, because they just have that generational talent coming in, of like, you know, like, it's like, it's like hockey, like, some years Canada is really good at hockey. Other years, the US is really good hockey. So how Russia has always been a hockey, I don't know, it's probably because the steroids, but like, you know, there's just generational talents that come in, and you're like, so you'll watch like a draft and realize, like, a lot of Americans went this year, and it's because they had that generational talent. So it's like, it's like, it sucks. But there are some things where it's just like, you can't control it. You just have to have that culture to breed that success. And that's what I think a lot of coaches are realizing now where it's like, you know, you can't always bring in top talent. And when you do, it's unreliable. But if you can, sounds almost like a brainwashing. But if you can get someone and get them into your system, and show them that you care and like to guide them along, it's funny, what you'll get is some could be done, but then you can get to great players like unfortunately, I know you always roll your eyes. But one of the top players right now in the Premier League Mason mount is a homebred Chelsea soccer player, and he is one of the top midfielders in the in the Premier League right through. And even a lot of other top midfielders in the Premier League from other teams came from the Chelsea Academy. That's because they had one good year recruiting a bunch of people when the Chelsea team was doing really good. And then who knows in a few years, it'll be somebody else like Man City had it. I'm sure they're German teams that had between Bayern Dortmund it Leipzig like all that it's

it's so different when you come into different situations because I the same thing. In maybe in Poland and Germany to where like we had the time of Germany, we had a really good group come up who basically just won the juniors championship. And then we had, as compared to, I guess, maybe in Poland by second, actually this past year where we had a lot of good older players, but they didn't really realize that their time was really kind of up against the wall almost within the next season or two. So kind of what we ran through and this is how you kind of approach it's like whenever I come into a new situation in hockey, completely different but it's like, I come in I'm like, Alright, I kind of set a standard. These are standards I expect to keep and that's kind of how it is and it's like well, you know, like older veterans like either you buy into this And, you know, you try to, you know, kind of resonate this with everybody else, or you can fight me on it all year long. And then you can slowly lose your place and kind of what will happen. But then for the young guys is like, well, you kind of have to buy into it and what we do, or you know, same thing, it's like they kind of they're at the beginning of the of their careers, and they kind of have little bit confidence. So they're like, well, we can try to work our way through it. No big deal. But what we found was like, in Germany, at least, the old guys were like, okay, you know, everything makes sense. Things work out, well, we'll just kind of buy into it for now see how things click. And we and don't get me wrong, and things were not perfect. But I've had numerous times where whenever I talk to other, oh, people have certain calls that work really, really well for them. They're like, Oh, we're gonna do our own way. But then this is the best teaching mode I've ever had with any other team I've been with. I talk about how much like, I was like, Well, I remember there's numerous times where we give a touchdown because they kind of revert back to their old stuff. And they come off. Yeah, it's had its habit. And then And then, you know, you realize what they're doing. You know, cuz I can see, you know, on the sideline, but then you pull them aside like, Well, are you guys done doing the crap that you guys have been doing the past couple years? Like, what do you mean? And so you describe it to him, like, that's what you guys been doing? The last number of years. So this is, like, if you want to, if you want to start winning, you do the stuff that I've been teaching you and that's it. And then that's kind of how it worked in Germany, Poland, it's a bit different. You get a little bit older guys are like, alright, either I start to kind of push these guys out a little bit, and then you kind of up the younger guys, you'll have less experience, but they'll work their ass off for you. Yep. And then you're like, Well, you know, the problem is you have and maybe some other teams are like this, I know overseas are like this a lot. But then you get like some GMs involved or owners of all are like, well, we don't think this works for us. Are you not doing it? Their identity? Yep. Yeah, that's a well, if you want to be average, that's how it is. If you want to start winning games, or at least be above average, or too good. This is how we do it.
